MCL – Free Film Screening: Just Getting By at Manchester Community Library
Manchester, VT — Thursday, May 1st— The Manchester Community Library is proud to host a free screening of Just Getting By, a powerful new documentary by Bess O’Brien that explores the realities of food and housing insecurity in Vermont. The screening is part of the 2024 Vermont Reads program, presented in partnership with Vermont Humanities and inspired by this year’s selected book, Gather by Kenneth M. Cadow.
Just Getting By provides an intimate and sweeping look into the lives of Vermonters facing economic hardship—from working families and unhoused individuals to New Americans and Native communities. Through deeply personal storytelling, the film highlights both the struggles and the incredible resiliency of those navigating life with limited resources.
Filmed between 2022 and 2023, the documentary shines a light on Vermont’s startling statistics: the second highest rate of homelessness in the country and nearly one-third of residents facing food insecurity. The film was produced by Kingdom County Productions and shot by cinematographer Patrick Kennedy.
Following the screening, attendees are invited to join a community Q&A with director Bess O’Brien, individuals featured in the film, and fellow audience members.
