Barbara Shermund’s Original Cartoons at MCL
Manchester, VT — The wit, charm, and cultural insight of groundbreaking cartoonist Barbara Shermund will be on full display at a new gallery exhibition opening Friday, August 8th, 5:00 pm at Manchester Community Library. Titled Let’s Share Some Laughs, the event honors Shermund’s legacy with a curated selection of original cartoons and a special presentation on her life and work by art historian and curator Timothy Stevenson.
“I’m very excited on the 100th anniversary of the New Yorker to be able to highlight Barbara Shermund,” said Stevenson. “Her original cartoons and cover artwork were a part of the magazine from the very beginning.”
Barbara Shermund (1899–1978) was one of the first women to regularly publish in The New Yorker, contributing hundreds of cartoons beginning in the publication’s inaugural year, 1925. Her clever depictions of modern women—independent, witty, and often daring—brought fresh perspective to American humor and helped define the tone of one of the nation’s most iconic magazines. In 1950, she was one of the first three women inducted into the National Cartoonists Society.
The opening event will feature a discussion by Timothy Stevenson exploring Shermund’s biography, her contributions to the cartooning world, and the broader cultural landscape of her time. Guests are invited to explore the exhibition, enjoy refreshments, and experience the enduring humor of one of America’s most influential cartoonists.
