AMHS names valedictorian, salutatorian for 2017

ARLINGTON — Arlington Memorial High School (AMHS) Principal Tim Stewart has announced the Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the graduating Class of 2017.  Jena Staab received valedictory honors, and Maggie Smith earned salutatory honors. Staab and Smith will address their classmates during their Graduation ceremony,Saturday, June 10, at 12 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.

Valedictorian Staab received the University of Vermont’s prestigious Green and Gold Award and plans to study mechanical engineering at the university in the fall.  Staab is president of the AMHS National Honor Society and was recognized as an AP Scholar with Honor.  She has earned academic excellence awards in math and science and received the 2016 Women Society of Engineers Highest Honor Award.  Staab is a three-sport varsity athlete having competed with the AMHS soccer team and the track & field team, where she served as captain.  Staab was also captain of the Mount Anthony Union High School swim team and the Tritons summer swim team in Manchester.  She is a ski instructor at Mount Snow and works as a lifeguard at the Manchester Rec Park.  Staab is the daughter of Stacie Staab and Jeff Staab, both of Arlington.
Salutatorian Smith is president of the senior class and a member of the National Honor Society.  She also serves as president of the AMHS computer club and captain of the varsity girls’ golf team.  Smith was awarded the 2016 St. Michael’s College Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience and the Society of Women Engineers High Honor Award.  In addition, Smith has received academic excellence awards in computer technology and English and is a three-time recipient of the President’s Community Service Award.  She is a violinist with the Green Mountain Youth Orchestra and a rod winder for The Orvis Company.  Smith will study information technology and web science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the fall.  She is the daughter of K.John and Melissa Smith of Arlington.
