The Canfield Gallery, located at the Martha Canfield Memorial Free Library in Arlington is pleased to present a new exhibit of previously unpublished black and white photographs by William F. Hayden (1880-1964).
Hayden, a Sunderland native, captured daily life in Sunderland, Arlington, and Sandgate, Vermont, from 1907 through 1915. His subjects included family, friends, social life, and local businesses.
Hayden learned photography at the Illinois College of Photography. Many of his photographs will seem familiar since many have been widely published and distributed without credit. A number of books have included his prints (such as the 1993 Arlington Along the Battenkill by Hugh Henry.), and his postcards have been widely available.
This exhibit features photographs printed from glass plate negatives found in the family attic. Of particular interest is Hayden’s 1907 photograph of Rob Shuffleton’s Barbershop memorialized in Norman Rockwell’s iconic 1950 Saturday Evening Post cover.
The free exhibit runs from July 8th to August 8th. An opening reception and presentation on Hayden’s life will be presented by Avis Hayden from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on July 12th at the Martha Canfield Library. Please call 802-375-6153 for more information.
