One of southern Vermont’s oldest, most unique and perennially popular events—Norman’s Attic
Fall Fest—is coming soon to Arlington! Plan to join us again this year as St. James’ Episcopal
Church readies the town center for the festivities on Saturday, September 19th, from 9 a.m. until
4 p.m. (If necessary, the rain date will be Sunday, the 20th, from noon ’til 5 p.m.).
Residents, visitors, family and friends have looked forward to this welcome harbinger of autumn
for more than 25 years. Originally conceived as a community-wide tag sale, named in honor of
“Saturday Evening Post” illustrator and long-time resident Norman Rockwell, the event
continues to feature offerings from private homes, barns and attics throughout the village. The
festival itself has evolved to focus on Main Street, specifically the green in front of St. James’,
the first Episcopal church in Vermont, founded in 1764. Tents and booths will line both sides of
the road and marble sidewalks for the day, making it a pleasure for pedestrians to shop for gifts
and treasures as they stroll.
A wide range of 50+ vendors, both local and “from away,” will feature antiques, collectibles,
clothing for both children and adults, maple syrup, winter wear such as hand-knit hats, scarves
and mittens, goats-milk and bee products, vinyl records, artwork and hand-crafted jewelry,
leather goods and woodware, and much more. Entertainment will be provided by local folk
bands and performers throughout the day in front of St. James’, and visitors are welcome to
explore the historic graveyard abutting the church, as well as the church itself.
Food is always a highlight of the Fall Fest, from coffee and pastries available at the start of the
event to a well-stocked and ably-tended grill serving hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers and
sides from late morning on. This year’s menu will also feature a choice of homemade chilis, both
meat and vegetarian. The highlight of the food offerings will be the traditional long table of
freshly made two-crust apple pies, the handiwork of St. James’ parish bakers, who also have
been busy creating other sweet and savory treats.
Do you have wares to share? There is still room for vendors if you’d like to join the central
marketplace. If you sign up for a space before September 13th, the cost is $65. To register
during the week of the event, the fee is $75.
