Daniel Webster, one of the foremost political figures of his day in the 1830’s and 1840’s, once came to a field near the boundary line between Stratton and Sunderland and gave a speech at a rally there -on July 7, 1840, 180 years ago – in support of local Vermont Whig Party members. 15,000 people came to hear his speech.
