About St. Martin’s Day
St. Martin of Tours was a Roman soldier turned bishop, remembered for cutting his own cloak in
half to share with a freezing beggar on a cold winter night. His feast day, November 11th,
became St. Martin’s Day (Martinstag), widely celebrated across Germany, Austria, and the
Netherlands, where children carry handmade lanterns through the dark streets in his honor,
symbolizing light, generosity, and warmth shared with others.
