Rising Unafraid: Dr. Bama Athreya On Advancing Gender Equality In A Hostile Landscape
Dorset, VT — PFLAG Dorset is honored to welcome Dr. Bama Athreya, Executive
Director of ICRW Americas, as the featured speaker at its monthly meeting on Sunday,
October 11, 2026, 2:00 p.m. at the Dorset Church, 143 Church Street, Dorset. Dr.
Athreya will offer an overview of the global fight for the rights of women and gender
diverse people in today’s changed and increasingly hostile landscape. This interactive
conversation will give attendees practical options for advocacy.
Since 1976, the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) has led the global
agenda for gender equity and inclusion. Its experts, based primarily in the Americas,
Africa, and Asia, conduct research and advance innovative public policy on issues
including economic opportunity and security, health and reproductive rights, gender
norms, and climate action.
Dr. Bama Athreya (she/her), Executive Director of ICRW Americas, brings diverse
experience across government, philanthropy, and NGOs. Before joining ICRW, she was
appointed by President Biden as Deputy Assistant Administrator at USAID where she
led offices that elevated global attention to gender equality, LGBTQI+ rights and
inclusion, disability rights, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, and other social inclusion
portfolio. Under her leadership, USAID released its first-ever LGBTQI+ Inclusion Policy.
She previously served as Executive Director of the International Labor Rights Forum,
where she led global initiatives with key stakeholders to protect workers’ rights around
the world. Dr. Athreya holds a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the University of
Michigan.
