WASHINGTON, D.C. – As President Trump continues to ignore skyrocketing costs and hit American families with a new round of tariffs, U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Member of the Senate Finance Committee, joined Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and 12 Senate colleagues in introducing the End Trump’s Tariff Tax Act to stop the president’s newest global tariffs and 50% tariffs on Canada and curtail his ability to continue waging a unilateral trade war.  

The Senators’ new legislation would revoke and refund President Trump’s latest barrage of tariffs and repeal the archaic authorities he has used to continue his trade war. This legislation would apply to President Trump’s recent Section 301 tariffs on 60 countries, previously imposed Section 122 temporary global tariffs, and the 50% Canadian tariffs. 

“Since his very first day in office, President Trump has made it harder for everyone to make ends meet—farmers, small businesses, and working families have been hit hard by his reckless economic policies. This president’s on-and-off again tariffs show how totally disconnected he is from the needs and struggles of working Americans,” said Senator Welch. “We need to relieve the American people of the financial and emotional burden these tariffs have created—that’s exactly what the End Trump’s Tariff Tax Act would do.”  

“While inflation rages, families struggle to pay their bills, and small businesses close, Trump – detached from reality – continues his bluster on the global stage, doubling down on a chaotic trade war that has meant only pain for American families, farmers, and manufacturers,” said Leader Schumer. “Republicans won’t stand up to Trump’s nonsense and Americans are crying out for relief. That’s why I am introducing legislation that would end Trump’s costly tariff taxes.” 

Joining Senator Welch and Leader Schumer on this legislation are Sens. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Angus King (I-Maine), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), and Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.). 

Earlier this year, Senate Democrats published a “Broken Promises” report exposing how President Trump’s global trade war has raised costs for American families & small businesses, increased unemployment, and destabilized the U.S. economy. The report also highlights how President Trump uses his trade schemes to enrich himself and billionaire political allies. 

Senator Welch recently introduced the bicameral Banning Antiquated Duties and Delivering Equitable American Levies (BAD DEAL) Act to repeal Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, and refund all duties paid under this authority. President Trump has implemented the 50% tariffs on Canada under Section 338. Senator Welch also cosponsors the bipartisan Trade Review Act, which seeks to restore Congress’ constitutional role in trade policy. The Senator also led the Creating Access to Necessary American-Canadian Duty Adjustments (CANADA) Act, legislation that would exempt United States-owned small businesses from tariffs imposed on Canada under IEEPA authorities.
