Visible Mending- The Darn Weave
As the seasons change, it is a good time to take a closer look at the knits we love and get them ready for another winter.
A small hole, a worn elbow, or a snag does not have to mean the end of a beloved garment. In this hands-on visible mending workshop, you will learn a woven repair technique that transforms damage into an intentional and beautiful design detail. Rather than hiding a repair, we will highlight it, strengthening the fabric while honoring the history of the garment.
You will be guided step by step through the fundamentals of this technique in a supportive and creative setting. We will explore how to stabilize damaged areas, build a woven structure, and choose threads that either blend beautifully with the garment or create a thoughtful contrast.
Participants are invited to bring a knitted garment in need of some care, such as a sweater with small holes, a well-loved pair of thick socks, or another treasured piece that has been waiting to be repaired. You will have the opportunity to begin mending your own garment and put your new skills into practice.
Through the process, we will consider repair as a form of care and a way of extending the life of the clothes we already own. You will leave with practical skills, renewed confidence, and a fresh perspective on giving well-loved garments a second life.
No prior sewing experience is needed.
About the Instructor
Sarah is a Vermont-based maker rooted in craftsmanship, sustainability, and care. She studied fashion design in Germany and began her career in theater, where she developed a deep respect for material, detail, and the expressive power of garments.
Her work later brought her to a couture studio in Beijing, where she gained a deeper appreciation for the time and craftsmanship behind every finished garment. After moving to the United States, she founded a sustainable brand creating handmade leather bags and naturally dyed textiles.
Today, her focus centers on teaching and community building, seeing mending as both a practical skill and a gesture of love and resistance.
