By definition liberal democracy, also called Western-style democracy, is a system of government that combines free and fair elections with legal protections for individual rights and limits on government power. American democracy is under strain from many directions. Between the rise of the "unitary executive" theory, the pull of money and corporate influence, and a widening cultural schism, many wonder whether liberal democracy in America has disappeared.
