Green Mountain Academy is excited to welcome author Diana B. Carlin to talk about early first ladies in the United States. The first two U.S. first ladies, Martha Washington and Abigail Adams, were deeply involved in the fight for freedom. They and other early first ladies helped their husbands create a new nation through a combination of social and diplomatic skills and political savvy. Their impact on the republic's early years is examined through their words and their actions in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. Martha created a role that had no precedent, Abigail brought political insights to supporting her husband, and Dolley Madison created an environment for bipartisanship during a fraught time in the young country's development and influenced future presidential couples and their contributions to shaping the nation. New Englander, Jane Pierce, rose above her personal tragedies to take a stance on an issue that would later tear the country apart.
